Day 20- Kansas

Day 20: Kansas

Saving the best for last, the Grumpys are taking over the blog for the next few days! Say hello to Brady Whitney, Allie Blackburn, Dakota Davis, Mandy Peake, Lauren Letts, Bailey Rollins, Danielle Sosebee, Carter Williamson, CJ Hill, Brett Bassani, Halen Lawing, Emma Dean, Jordan Meyers, and Jenna Bullard.  Last night, as we were sleeping at Colorado College, we had a few unexpected guests. Bats!! Our counselors were able to find one and Ian grabbed it with a plastic bag and took it outside. Miss Beautiful took care of the screaming teenagers (us) pretty quickly because we had a long day of driving ahead of us.

This morning we woke up early and began our drive through Kansas. After eating delicious mini muffins and apples, we enjoyed looking at all of the beautiful cornfields, wheat, wind turbines, and oil rigs (Owen J informed us that all Kansas oil rigs are in Kansas during his research presentation). Our first stop of the day was at the happiest place on earth, Wally-World! A few people (Olivia G, Bailey R, Lauren L, Mandy P, and Halen L) found 97-cent rubber ducks. Although bus cleaners mistook the Wal-Mart bags as trash, so the ducks quickly went MIA. Some people enjoyed a hot cup of free coffee from the Kansas visitor’s center, while others had the chance to take a picture with Dorothy’s ruby red slippers from the famous Wizard of Oz.  After the welcome center and a few gas stations it was finally time for lunch! We enjoyed turkey and ham wraps.

Our exciting stop of the day!!!

On the bus, we voted to watch Angry Birds (Owen was very excited about the decision). After this, we watched Brother Bear, which also made the bus ride more entertaining. Because of the long bus ride some people opted for sleeping instead of watching the movies. The vans were a different story. In the morning, they were full of snoring, but that quickly changed in the afternoon. On Miss America, counselor Dustin was jammin’ to CDs and Spotify. His favorite was Styx, CD brought to you by CJ Hill. After a few long hours, we stopped at Kansas State, while Riley H. presented her research about the state of Kansas and Tyler Z. told us about the University of Kansas. Not long after, we made another Wal-Mart stop in Manhattan and then headed to our campsite. We had a slight van malfunction with Carolina Girl, which was fortunately noticed and checked out before anything happened. Because of that we all got to spend a little extra time exploring Wal-Mart, which we're used to by now!

For dinner, the Sneezys/Sleazys cooked bacon macaroni and cheese, chicken, and green beans. There were a couple mosquitos mixed in, but that was just extra protein. Dessert was “gourmet”cosmic brownies. Before we ate, Jackson W. and Connor C. found a dead little friend in the lake, called Pete the Fish. They traumatized some with it, while some brave souls (CJ Hill) may have partaken in kissing it. Meanwhile, others had fun playing Pirate Mad Libs, calling parents, and preparing for a night on the asphalt. Some of us showered in the bath house and others showered in bug spray. Signing off for today, Grumpy Gang out!

PARENTS:

A note from Daisy:
We have a minor problem with one of our vans, which is due to be fixed tomorrow (Monday) morning. Myself and another counselor (Ian) have stayed behind in Manhattan, Kansas with 10 participants to account for being down one van and waiting for it to get fixed. The blog may be posted a little later tomorrow due to the fact that we will be driving 12 hours to meet up with the rest of the group in Kentucky. Thanks again for your patience, and know that I will do my best to get it up and posted! Because of this, I also won't be able to get the Grumpy group to blog about their day in St. Louis as expected so the blog may be slightly different. I'll do my best! We are enjoying Kansas and everyone has been a great sport about volunteering to stay and wait for the van. See you all in a couple of days at Mallard Creek!
