Day 2- New Orleans

Day 2: New Orleans

As the day began we were woken up my Miss Beautiful screaming in the gym and cutting on the lights!! We had about 45 minutes to pack up and load up as quickly as possible. Our first stop was the famous Auburn University. We stopped to see the Auburn sign and hear some participants present their research and take some group pictures.

After that we went to one of the most famous places during the entire trip: WALMART!!! The cooks prepared us some breakfast, which consisted of a Poptart and a Caprisun. Six of us Bashfuls were on the bus enjoying some rest. Katelyn McKenney, Ash Wallace, Riley Houser, Abby Brannen, and Macy Monteith were making bracelets with friends while Connor Corcoran and others were playing cards with Jackson Ward’s help.  On Carolina Girl and Miss America Kiran G. and Amber R. learned how to make friendship bracelets with Maevis Pair and Savanna Pickens’ assistance. Also on Carolina girl we had a special performance by Hunter B. singing to “Fergalicious” (HE KNEW EVERY WORD).

At noon we were starving and the cooks gave us all yummy DIY sandwiches consisting of turkey/ham and cheese with an assortment of condiments. After lunch we went through a time zone and gained an hour so we had to help our friends set their watches back. We arrived in New Orleans after a loooong time driving/riding and we were ready to shop! First we walked over to some stairs that led down to the Mississippi River and listened to presentations from Carter W., Katelyn M., Grant H., Abby B., and Brooke H. Meanwhile, we were splashed by two strangers who were giving each other haircuts and swimming in the Mississippi River while presentations were going on.

Next, we stopped at Café Du Monde for beignets, which are powdered sugar covered doughnuts. Some ordered coffee, another staple order at the Café. We then walked to the historical St. Louis Cathedral to look around at the stained glass and the beautiful ceiling. Then, we dispersed into groups to walk around the city and shop. We visited creepy voodoo shops, saw human statues, and participated in palm readings (Grace E. is having 7 grandchildren). Locals who expected donations for “free” beads unfortunately approached many of us. We learned a valuable lesson about travel!

We left the city with stickers, t-shirts, postcards, and the occasional voodoo doll. To get to where we are staying tonight, we crossed a 24-mile bridge across Lake Ponchatrain!

On the vans and bus, we were divided into our groups to work on our presentations for the night. We were told to create our own artistic interpretation of “Dixieland Delight.” After we had delicious burrito bowls and ice cream sandwiches brought to us by our wonderful cooks (the Happy group), we presented our creations. Everyone had a great time, no matter what the productions looked like. We laughed real hard and clapped real loud. Our group ended up winning! Go Bashfuls!!! We got a speech from Mrs. Beautiful about waking up earlier and received our TWB sportswear. Tonight, we stay indoors at a beachside resort! We’re kidding, but it’s very nice and there is A/C!
