Day 10- LA and Hollywood

Day 10: LA and Hollywood

Hey guys it’s the Sleepys again, up and running from some naps on the bus. This morning we got to leave the ants at Canyon RV Park for good as we climbed onto the bus and vans around 6:00 a.m. This time the drive would be a little longer because we were off to the Hollywood Bowl. Still tired from our time at Disneyland yesterday, some chose to sleep on the bus while others chose to watch the city of Los Angeles came to life. Here we got our first real taste of California, or more specifically, LA traffic. What should’ve been around a 45-minute trip became an hour and a half ride to the Bowl, our first destination. While we didn’t actually get to see the inside of the Hollywood Bowl because of an ongoing rehearsal (thanks Gustavo Dudamel), this meant we got to go to our next destination a little earlier. We would make our way down the streets of LA to see the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Chinese Theatre. We got a taste of fame the second we got off the bus by seeing the Jimmy Kimmel Live outdoor stage and a bus for Rascal Flatts.

Once we stepped upon the hands and feet of decades’ worth of stars, we initiated a classic TWB prank. One of our staff, Ian Hensley, was designated to be the “celebrity,” while the more vocal girls were chosen to be the “fans.” Ian would walk by and the girls would begin shrieking that here in front of them was the stand-in for Romi Malik as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Ian had just shaved and his fine mustache served to only make our prank that much better. Once the girls began screaming and the other kids began crowding, many foreign tourists caught up in the excitement surged forward, having Ian sign papers, hats and even shirts. Many selfies were taken. With the tourists cleared out, our members were able to have plenty of time photographing the famous hands and feet. Afterwards, we spent time in La La Land, where we grabbed souvenirs from the City of Angels. Back into the vehicles we went, and down Sunset Boulevard. We got to see the glitz and glamour up close in Beverly Hills, although Ian was the only celebrity we saw. Our next stop nearby was the University of California Los Angeles.

Once we arrived at UCLA we were treated to catching up on research from the state of Arizona to the Movie Studies in Hollywood. We all learned a lot and enjoyed a lunch of pizza bagels and cookies on the campus. Our group then got to take a trip to the UCLA bookstore to buy shirts, sweatshirts, and all things bearwear. A lot of us also got to facetime family and friends at home in the campus tech store which was special to all of us. We took a picture in front of the bronze bruin on campus and climbed on the bus to head to our campsite in El Capitan.

In El Capitan our groups got started doing jobs like cleaning the vans and cooking dinner while others showered on went down onto the beach. For dinner tonight we were excited to eat a home cooked meal of grilled chicken, green beans, and mashed potatoes. After dinner many of us got to have a little bit of a dance party before Mr. Grant Deaton himself lead our singalong at sunset. We sang many songs and we all seem more lively and we know the songs much better now than the first night. After we closed our singalong and heard about our next few days, we enjoyed smores by a campfire and headed onto bed. Tomorrow we have a big day of driving on Highway 1. Not so lucky for us Sleepys, we aren’t allowed to sleep much during the day tomorrow like always (but we do get time in the morning to nap don’t worry parents).
